Heart Screening Integrity
In light of recent federal consumer alerts regarding fraudulent, commercial cardiovascular testing networks, Who We Play For (WWPF) wants to provide absolute transparency regarding how our non-profit organization operates. We completely support increased regulatory oversight to eliminate predatory businesses that exploit families.
Below, we address the specific warning signs outlined by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and explain how Who We Play For upholds the highest standard of medical and organizational ethics.
-
Fraud Indicator: Fraudulent commercial entities bypass primary care doctors specifically to perform high-volume, medically unnecessary diagnostic tests (like complex echocardiograms) solely to over-bill insurance networks for profit.
The WWPF Standard: Who We Play For provides preventative non-invasive electrocardiograms (ECGs). Our mission is to democratize access to basic heart screenings for all student-athletes, removing socioeconomic barriers.
-
Fraud Indicator: Bad actors use the promise of "free tests" as a predatory hook to prey on parents' fears of sudden cardiac arrest, using the events as data-harvesting operations.
The WWPF Standard: Who We Play For was founded by a community of grieving families and survivors to prevent tragedy. Our outreach is strictly focused on public health awareness and safety education. Our community screening costs are heavily subsidized by philanthropic donations, grants, and corporate sponsorships to keep the flat fee universally affordable for families, with no strings attached.
-
Fraud Indicator: Fraudulent groups ask for insurance cards upfront at a "free" event so they can later submit thousands of dollars in unauthorized medical claims.
The WWPF Standard: WWPF community screenings are powered by transparent flat fees or donor funding, we do not collect insurance information at our events. On rare occasions for advanced care, we may connect families with licensed, accredited medical third parties who accept legitimate health insurance. However, we never force insurance disclosure as a requirement for a community screening.
-
Fraud Indicator: Corrupt practices force every single student into an array of highly specialized, expensive imaging tests (like full echocardiograms) that are clinically unnecessary, just to maximize billing.
The WWPF Standard: We perform a uniform baseline preventative ECG screening, which is widely recognized as the most effective tool for identifying hidden genetic heart conditions in youth athletes. We do not mass-administer complex diagnostic imaging panels at our community events. Advanced imaging is only in the communication of the screening results if a student's baseline ECG reveals a specific clinical abnormality.
-
Fraud Indicator: The recent federal case exposed a corrupt medical director who signed off on hundreds of student heart scans in mere seconds as "normal" without ever looking at the images, resulting in catastrophic medical failures and patient death.
The WWPF Standard: This is where Who We Play For stands furthest apart from fraudulent entities. Every single ECG wave collected at a WWPF event is securely transmitted to and carefully interpreted by real, highly qualified, board-certified pediatric cardiologists. We maintain strict clinical protocols, and every abnormal finding is communicated directly to the family with clear, actionable documentation to ensure a seamless, safe continuity of care.
