Florida Passed SB 1070
The Second Chance Act
What You Need to Know
-
The SB 1070 requires student athletes to receive an electrocardiogram (ECG) heart screening before participating in FHSAA sanctioned athletics beginning with the 2026 school year.
-
Sudden cardiac arrest is the #1 cause of death in student-athletes and on school campuses.
23,000 youth suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrest annually in the U.S.
1 in 300 youth has an undiagnosed heart condition that could lead to sudden death.
Standard sports physicals miss up to 90% of at-risk youth, whereas, ECGs increase detection to 94% sensitivity, with the lowest false-positive rate among medical procedures.
Italy has seen an 89% drop in sudden cardiac deaths after implementing an ECG screening requirement.
-
An ECG is a quick, non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of the heart. Given the new law (SB 1070), there will be tens of thousands of kids seeking ECGs annually across Florida.
