Strong Families Tax Credit
How Florida Businesses Can Fund Heart Screenings Through the Strong Families Tax Credit
Your business already pays Florida taxes. Through the Strong Families Tax Credit, some of those dollars can go toward heart screenings for Florida kids instead.
What is the Strong Families Tax Credit?
Florida created the Strong Families Tax Credit in 2021 to support charitable organizations that serve the welfare and well-being of children. When a business contributes to an eligible organization, it receives a dollar-for-dollar credit against certain Florida taxes. The Florida Department of Children and Families decides which organizations are eligible.
Which taxes does it apply to?
Corporate income tax
Excise tax on liquor, wine and malt beverages
Gas and oil production tax
Insurance premium tax
Use tax paid under a direct pay permit
Also ahead: American Heart Month and a virtual ECG training, both in February
How it works
1
Your business applies to the Florida Department of Revenue for a tax credit allocation.
2
Once approved, your business makes its contribution to Who We Play For.
3
Your business claims the credit against the Florida tax it applied for.
The Florida Department of Revenue's Strong Families page has the full details, and your tax advisor can tell you how it fits your company.
Why heart screenings
Since July 1, 2025, Who We Play For has completed about 98,100 heart screenings across every region of Florida, working alongside every children's hospital in the state. Those screenings found about 327 kids with potentially life-threatening heart conditions. A Strong Families contribution helps us keep screenings affordable, or free, for more families.
