Florida's Second Chance Act: What 98,100 Heart Screenings Found

Florida students receiving ECG heart screenings at a Who We Play For event

Florida made history with the passage of the Second Chance Act, and we're already seeing what it can mean for kids and families across the state. Since July 1, 2025, working alongside every children's hospital in Florida, Who We Play For has brought heart screenings to every region of the state.

What the screenings found

327

Kids with potentially life-threatening heart conditions

Approximate figures, July 1, 2025, through Oct. 4, 2026. Regions served: every region of Florida, in partnership with all of Florida's children's hospitals.

Each of those numbers is a kid who now has the chance for follow-up care, and a family who has information they may not have had otherwise.

Every kid, not only athletes

The Second Chance Act focuses on student-athletes, but sudden cardiac arrest can happen to any child, whether or not they play sports. A law is only the beginning. Our work is to make sure every kid in Florida has access to affordable screening and follow-up care, whether they have insurance or not and wherever they live.

That's why we're building our [Centers of Excellence Program], a network of screening providers committed to consistent standards for cost, turnaround time and the screening experience. New locations are coming soon.

Help us reach more kids.

October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. A gift to Who We Play For helps us screen more Florida kids and connect families to the care they need. You can also read [Eli Silverman's story] to see why this work matters.
